WOOD-SKIN Sustainability Report 2024

At WOOD-SKIN, sustainability is a core value that guides every aspect of our business, from material selection to production processes and shipping logistics. We recognize the impact that architectural projects can have on the environment, and we are committed to minimizing our carbon footprint while creating innovative, high-quality products. This report outlines the key sustainability initiatives we’ve implemented to ensure our operations are environmentally responsible and aligned with the global push for greener construction practices.

1. Materials & Responsible Sourcing

We prioritize using sustainable materials throughout our product lines. WOOD-SKIN’s composite material consists of a combination of rigid panels, available in a variety of finishes, and a durable fabric core that binds the components together. Key sustainability features include:

  • Since January 2020, we have proudly joined the list of FSC®-certified Italian companies. The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC® ) is a global, not-for-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide. FSC defines standards based on agreed principles for responsible forest stewardship that are supported by environmental, social, and economic stakeholders. Our composite panels can be made of recycled materials and other controlled sources, contact us for the full list of available materials.

  • Low-VOC Finishes: We use low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) materials and finishes, reducing the emission of harmful chemicals during installation and throughout the product’s lifecycle. This contributes to better indoor air quality and a healthier environment.

  • Bio-based composite: One of our R&D projects this year has been the development of a bio-based composite. Thanks to attentive research we found a 100% biobased adhesive with excellent bonding results and a jute fabric. Both were tested to create our composite material. Stay tuned for the final result.

2. Digital Fabrication & Efficiency

WOOD-SKIN employs cutting-edge digital fabrication techniques that optimize material use and reduce waste. The precision of our CNC (Computer Numerical Control) milling process ensures that each project is crafted with the exact amount of material needed, minimizing off-cuts and leftover scraps.

  • Flat Shipping: Our panels are designed for flat shipping, significantly reducing transportation volume and associated emissions. This compact packaging method allows for more efficient logistics, contributing to a reduced carbon footprint in the shipping process.

  • On-Demand Production: WOOD-SKIN is produced on demand, meaning we manufacture only what is needed for each specific project. This reduces overproduction and prevents waste associated with excess inventory.

3. Energy Efficiency & Manufacturing Practices

Our manufacturing process is carefully designed to minimize energy consumption while maintaining the highest quality standards. The Italian production facility where WOOD-SKIN is created uses energy-efficient machinery and sustainable practices, such as:

  • Optimized Energy Use: Using advanced software to calculate production needs, we ensure that our CNC machines and other equipment operate at peak efficiency, reducing energy waste.

  • Waste Reduction: We recycle a significant portion of our production waste, repurposing materials where possible and responsibly disposing of non-recyclable elements. This reduces the environmental impact of our manufacturing process.

4. Local Production, Global Reach

While WOOD-SKIN is produced in Italy, we serve clients around the globe. By using a flat shipping method, we reduce the carbon emissions associated with global logistics. Additionally, we work with local suppliers and partners who share our values of sustainability, ensuring that our operations support the communities in which we operate.

5. Minimizing Environmental Impact: Carbon Footprint Reduction

Our continuous efforts to reduce our environmental impact extend to our entire production and logistics chain:

  • Low-Emission Supply Chain: We carefully select suppliers that uphold environmentally conscious practices, further ensuring that our materials and components have the lowest possible carbon footprint.

  • Carbon Offsetting Initiatives: To counterbalance our unavoidable carbon emissions, we actively engage in carbon offsetting programs, supporting projects that restore forests and invest in renewable energy.

6. Commitment to Circular Economy

WOOD-SKIN is dedicated to embracing circular economy principles by designing products that are adaptable, repairable, and recyclable. Our Tailor-Made Service encourages clients to think long-term, creating custom solutions that are not only visually stunning but can also be reconfigured or repurposed as needed, reducing the demand for new raw materials.

WOOD-SKIN is designed with sustainability in mind, even at the end of a project’s lifecycle. Through our material recovery initiative, clients can send back their used WOOD-SKIN surfaces. In the factory we will separate the composite layers, ensuring proper disposal or recycling of each element. This process guarantees responsible material management, minimizing environmental impact and extending the value of the resources used.

At WOOD-SKIN, sustainability is more than a buzzword—it is a responsibility we take seriously as we innovate and expand the possibilities of architectural surfaces. We are committed to ongoing research and development to further reduce our environmental impact and enhance the sustainability of our products.

By choosing WOOD-SKIN, you are not only investing in innovative, cutting-edge design but also in a more sustainable future for architecture and construction.
